Character Name: Malik Ishtar
Age: 17
Canon: Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters
Canon Point: Post Dark Side of Dimensions
Character Information: Wikia
Personality: To a stranger, Malik would come off as quiet, but polite, and maybe a little shy. The perfect, well-behaved child every parent wishes they would have, and why can't their child be as sweet as that young man? Because Malik is, first and foremost, an amazing actor. He has an intimate knowledge of the human psyche from years of controlling and being inside other people's minds and knows how to change his disposition to get others to lower their guards around him. He's the type to smile and greet an old lady on the street of his neighborhood, stay and chat with her for a bit, listen to her bad jokes and laugh when appropriate, if a bit awkwardly, perfectly masking his true feelings of annoyance and impatience and general dislike of people as a whole. When you've been inside the minds of so many, you start to have a bleak outlook on life.
When he was a small child, Malik was filled with curiosity and wonder at the world outside, having never even seen the horizon before in his life due to being born and raised inside a tomb. While being upset at his own duty to being bound as a tombkeeper, when his adoptive brother offered to take the burden from him, he was excited and sure it would work. But when his father refused and forced him to go through the hours of a flame heated blade slicing through his skin during the Tombkeepers Initiation, everything about his personality changed. He became so filled with fear, rage and hate that it began to consume him, causing him to lash out at anyone around him in anger and slowly began disassociating from his own life as the emotions continued to grow and fester. And when he thought he witnessed his father murder his brother for allowing him to sneak out with his sister to see the outside world for the first time, he snapped.
Unlike Bakura and Yugi, whose "Dark selves" were ancient Egyptian spirits trapped inside the Sennen Items, Dark Malik was nothing more than a creation of Malik's own doing from the trauma he endured a year prior. Disassociative Identity Disorder would be the best description of the incident, though this is never explicitly stated in canon. Only that Dark Malik is a separate personality inside of Malik himself that was created from all the negative feelings Malik had bundled up inside of him from his initiation. Dark Malik manages to murder their father, but the moment his brother Rishid is shown to be alive, Malik himself wakes up with no memory of his crimes, and immediately puts the blame for their father's death on the Pharaoh himself due to Shadi showing up at the same time. This only made his anger and hate grow stronger, but so long as he had his brother by his side, his other personality stayed dormant.
Malik was 11 when he left home with his older brother, the day after the incident with their father dying, and between then and by the time he was sixteen, he managed to found and run a worldwide crime organization known as the Ghouls. While he used the power of the Sennen Rod to control people's minds for most of it, this still takes great levels of intelligence and leadership skills for someone so young to be so successful. He rose to the top very fast, becoming one of the most wealthy and dangerous men in the underground in only five years that lead up to the Battle City tournament. He ran on his desire for revenge against the Pharaoh for being responsible for his father's death and was determined to get the God Cards and become Pharaoh himself so he could free his family from their obligations as Tombkeepers. Anything and everything in his path he would burn to the ground, thrown aside, or capture to be his own pawn to use against others. He had little to no care for anyone beyond himself and his family, never thinking twice about sacrificing or seriously harming any of his Ghouls if it accomplished his Ghouls or if they had outlived their usefulness to him. He even went as far on some occasions to abuse his brother and sister if they were in his way or not following his orders, despite retaining his love for them.
Throughout the first part of Battle City, Malik spends his time controlling his Ghouls as puppets, dueling through them and mocking and gloating to his opponents, confident he was the one in the right at the end, even when he lost. No matter what went wrong or what got in his way, he remained optimistic he would win in the end, focused on the big picture and for the most part was able to find bright sides on how to change around a bad situation to use to his advantage. Such as when he was threatened by the Spirit of Ring to hand over his Rod, and instead made a deal with him to work together to get the Items and God Cards both while taking down the Pharaoh together. His acting shined through then when he pretended to be a boy named Namu who had "saved" Bakura from a Ghouls attack. He was polite and friendly, and other than mild suspicious, no one in Yugi's group suspected much of anything against him. He continued playing two sides, acting as their concerned and confused quiet friend Namu while using his Rod to communicate with his brother Rishid who was pretending to be Malik. It was when he forced Rishid to play a card he knew that was dangerous, where Rishid almost died and was near rendered unconscious, seeing what he had done to his own brother, that caused Malik to snap for the second time in his life.
When he discovered the truth behind what happened the day his father died, Malik was filled with regret at his own actions and realized that it was his own fault everything had gone so horribly wrong. He wallowed in self-guilt and self-pity, his spirit weak and mind broken as his other personality controlled his body and ran wild trying to destroy everything. It was his love for his siblings that had him going to the Spirit of the Ring and asking for his help, promising him not only his Rod if they won but also agreeing to show him the secrets to the Pharaoh's powers that were inscribed on his back. He warned his sister to hide the comatose Rishid to save him from being murdered by Dark Malik so he could never seal him away again, and with the Spirit of the Ring challenged him to a duel to the death. Malik's indignation and anger were back, only this time, they were directed at his other self, and by extension, himself as well. He accepted responsibility for what they had both done, that he was just as guilty as his other personality for what had happened, and told the Spirit of the Ring he didn't care if his body got destroyed in the Shadow Game, so long as they killed his other personality in the process. They fail due to Malik not having all the information he thought he did regarding the Winged Dragon of Ra card, and Malik's banished by his other personality as once again his will to fight is crushed.
It's only when Rishid wakes up and interrupts the final duel between Dark Malik and the Pharaoh that Malik regains his senses, and takes full responsibility for his own actions and has the strength to overpower his other personality to take control of his body back to forfeit the duel. In doing so, it's implied that since they were involved in a shadow game that was deteriorating their souls the more life points they lost, that Malik's other personality was banished permanently to the shadows by the magic of the Sennen Items. Malik himself is a bit more subdued after this, apologetic for his actions, and more often than not showing his personality as his quiet, polite mask. Only tell people what they want to hear when they want to hear it, and keeping his thoughts and concerns to himself. But that doesn't mean that he was really fully "reformed" as Yugi and his friends were quick to believe. They had assumed that once Malik's dark side was gone, Malik himself would be just like the rest of them. What they didn't take into account, however, was the fact that Malik never even knew about his dark side for most of his life. All of his actions were his own, and people don't just change overnight.
His willingness to kill to achieve his goals, even if it was a "bad guy" when dueling his other self shows that part of him hasn't changed very much. He is very might a person ruled by fight or flight instincts, willing to go down tooth and nail to destroy anything that he thinks might hurt him. If you hurt him, you'd better believe he's going to find the most effective way to hurt you back. He wanted to be free his entire life and lashes out when backed into a corner with full force and no mercy. He isn't seen much after Battle City, having fulfilled his duty by showing the Pharaoh the inscriptions on his back, he and his siblings returned to Egypt together to live peacefully on the surface. This shows that despite everything, his love for his siblings ruled out over his own personal needs and grudges.
But he was also willing to set aside his criminal activities and begin to make up for things he had done because that's what his brother and sister wanted of him. His evil villain phase aside, he had always been the affectionate younger brother to both of them while growing up. Rishid, who his father considered nothing more than their servant, was told by a sick and near dying Malik how he had always thought of him as a brother, and how sorry he was father punished him whenever Malik did something bad. He loved his sister for always teaching him, caring for him like a mother would since theirs had died giving birth to him, and appreciated her willingness to break their father's strict rules to show him the surface world for the first time when he was 11. They're what keep his mind stable, remind him why he's trying to stop himself from being the monster he knows he can become. Because while his other personality was banished, Malik will always hold that fear and anger inside himself, knowing that if he's not careful, something similar could happen again. If he disassociated twice already in five years, who's to say it wouldn't happen again?
Despite all the pain and suffering in his life, Malik manages to hold a mostly positive and curious outlook on things. Ever since his first visit to the surface, he's loved the sun and the open skies, the horizon stretched out endlessly in front of him. And, through it all, a motorbike of his very own to ride into the endless sky with the wind whipping around him. He was quick to buy his own motorbike the moment he was able to, and even had Rishid drive one at times so he could ride in a sidecar. On top of that, he also went out of his way to travel all the way to Japan on a fancy yacht, instead of taking a faster and more efficient means of travel. He dons himself in ancient golden bands from his family's treasury, wears traditional makeup and flaunts himself because he looks damn good and he knows it. He'll speak up to anyone who questions him or his opinions, standing up for himself and convincing whoever he needs that he's the one who's in the right and they're wrong. He's never been good at listening to authority either, as his father was on the ancient tradition side of rules and punishments, so used to being his own boss as the leader of the Ghouls for so many years that he begins to chafe and become irritated if he feels a situation is too far out of his control.
Overall, Malik has his good traits and his bad ones, just like everyone else. He's a sixteen-year-old boy who spent half of his life in an abusive environment, and the other half ruling an evil organization and get revenge for actions he himself was responsible for. He has his regrets, but he never gives up on loving life and everything it has to offer. He loves his siblings more than his own life, would sacrifice anything to keep them happy and safe, from burning down the world around them to make it happen or trying to reform his ways so they don't have to worry about him. Like his God card the Winged Dragon of Ra, he's a bright, shining force to be reckoned with despite all the catches that come along the way.
